Because It's not supposed to. By the time you join at the V you should about 60 stitches around--an 18" neck hole, which should fit easily over your head. Make sense?

I don't think I have an abnormally large head? Or, when measuring, do I need to measure the back of the neck where i want the sweater to fall, rather than the actual back of my neck with no ease?....I'm tempted to edit the directions to read "crochet a chain large enough to fit over your head and fiddle with the sleeve placement until it looks roughly like a raglan sleeve should."

When I worked out my guage I had 3.25 when I did the maths I left out the .25 bad move. Once I got to joining the V part it was tiny. 1st lesson round up the numbers. So it has been ripped out once. Now Ive got to joining the v and have used a larger needle as well it goes quite nicely over my head but I would prefer a deeper V.

I get first question. So, I've done my measurements, and made my starting chain. And it will not fit over my head in any way. It barely fits around my neck. I measured 6" for back of neck, and a guage of 3.5 stitches per inch, resulting in a starting chain of 41 stitches. Is this someting I've messed up, or do I need to go along and trust? (I've also tried switching to a larger hook size, and it didn't help either.)
