Crochet Cable Baby Afghan

Are you looking for the perfect crochet baby afghan? I have several friends with little ones arriving the first of next year. As I am looking through crochet blanket pattern options, I am asking myself "What are the important things to look for when choosing the right baby blanket pattern?"

Lacy openwork patterns are gorgeous when wrapped around a receiving blanket. A lace blanket is the perfect accessory to take to church, a garden party, or other special occasion,  but they don't make great everyday blankets.

For baby gifts, I prefer an afghan pattern that has a solid stitch pattern. These blankets will quickly become favorites. They are warm and the solid fabric will prevent little ones from getting their fingers and hands caught in the stitch openings.

The second thing I look for in a baby afghan pattern is an exciting stitch pattern or construction. Remember, while not as large as a regular afghan, a baby blanket will still mean hours of crochet. You want to pick a pattern that will keep you interested and excited.

I love crochet cables. Every other row is usually worked even in double or half double crochet (a great rest row), and after crocheting a few cable pattern repeats, the pattern is easily memorized. There are not very many cabled baby afghan patterns available, but I am in love with the Sólás Caomh by Jodi Euchner.

Irish for "tender comfort" the Sólás Caomh was designed by Jodi for a very special baby.  The combination of cables and the soft cotton and wool blend yarn creates a finished piece that adults and babies will love. This gorgeous textured afghan would make a beautiful heirloom piece-provided it isn't worn out with love by the first child.

My final consideration, when crocheting a baby blanket, is color. You can transform a pattern with the yarn color you choose. When you are creating a baby afghan, especially for someone you don't know as well, it is hard to beat the classics. The Sólás Caomh is stunning in shades of pink or blue. Or try it in a neutral and sunny yellow with a splash of green.

We have a limited number of Sólás Caomh kits available in the Crochet Me Shop. Each kit includes the afghan pattern and all of the yarn needed to crochet your blanket in blue, pink, or yellow and green. Order your kit before they are all gone!

Best wishes,

P.S. What do you look for when choosing a baby afghan pattern?

  1. We haven’t had any other comments about difficulty purchasing from the store. If you are still having trouble, you can try ordering over the phone. You can call Customer Service at 1-866-949-1646 ext.495.

  2. I just love that pattern! It’s the kind of baby item that gets passed down from generation to generation. Another favorite of mine for baby blankets is a ripple pattern–the most eye-catching I’ve seen so far is one with texture, and beautiful colors.
