Weekend Best: Meet the Designers of Unexpected Afghans Blog Tour Weekend & Giveaways!

Jun 29, 2012

Every year at about this time in the summer, I love going on weekend architecture & home garden tours or visiting historical homes to see how other people adorn their homes, landscape and of course their craft room. I am always on the lookout for crocheted afghans and pillows. It's an exercise in design voyeurism (in a good way), and I always walk away feeling a little creative rejuvenation and inspiration.

Crocheted AfghanFor those of you who also enjoy visiting other's creative spaces, I have a treat for you! This weekend we're hosting a Meet-the-Designers Blog Tour to celebrate the launch of Unexpected Afghans: Innovative Crochet Designs with Traditional Techniques by Robyn Chachula.

Unexpected Afghans presents 29 innovative interpretations of a favorite crochet essential, the beloved afghan, from Robyn Chachula and her team of expert designers and crochet masters. On this exciting tour, you'll get a peek inside the homes and design inspiration of 19 of the book's contributors.

Robyn Chachula writes in the book's introduction, "My initial approach to this book was that pure sense of just being nosy-what do other crochet designers have in their houses? That then morphed into, what would an afghan look like at Leigh Radford's house or in Drew Emborsky's studio? And finally, how amazing would it be to have all the masters work on one big canvas to showcase our craft so we all can decorate our homes?"

"The results are astounding," says Robyn. "I asked each crochet designer to use the afghan as a vehicle to showcase their favorite aspect of crochet. Some went colorful, some turned to granny motifs, and others came up with intricate stitch patterns. Each project highlights the beauty of crochet cables, colorwork, lace, granny motifs, or Tunisian crochet. Plus, every project has the intimate stamp of the designer's unique inspiration."

This Crochet Chevron Pillowweekend blog tour kicks off right here on Crochet Me, and we have some exciting giveaways for our readers. Every blogger is giving away a free Unexpected Afghans eBook on his/her blog, including us! Interweave is giving away 20 eBooks in all!

Plus, we're giving away to 5 lucky readers here on CrochetMe.com enough yarn to make Robyn Chachula's Elan Waves Pillow pattern, a fun pillow that is a wild experiment in color combinations. Each of the five winners in this exciting giveaway will receive six skeins of Lion Brand Yarn Vanna's Choice in colors #144 Magenta, #99 Linen #171 Fern, #194 Lime, #146 Dusty Purple and #125 Taupe (thanks Lion Brand Yarn!).

Leave a comment below and tell us which is your favorite afghan in this book to be entered into our random drawing to win! You can check out all of the afghans on our Crochet Me Facebook page.

I would like to try the diamond shapes afghan featured on the cover! Love the colors and haven't done diamond shapes before. Think it would be fun.

After a quick peek at all of the designs, I have to say my favorite would have to be the "Mod Retro Afghan".  I just love the colors.  Groovy baby!  :-)

I completely adore Kim Guzman's Van Gogh Waves - the colours, the textures - it's outstanding! It looks too like a mix of knitting and crochet although I read that it's Tunisian crochet. Waves is certainly the right name for it too - the colour and texture remind me of the sea I visited as a child near my grandparents house on the east coast of Scotland. One of my grandfather's hobbies was to paint pictures and this afghan makes me think of the colour and texture of the sea in his paintings as well as in real life.

I can't believe all the talented people out there!  Including individuals who create at home on their own!  I may be able to replicate by following the patterns, but to actually design these is awesome!  I love all the designs, but I will eventually HAVE to try making the "Behrens Color Block Afghan", designed by Leigh Radford and the "Van Gogh Waves", designed by Kim Guzman.
