Kristin Omdal's Expert Picks

Nov 11, 2013

Are you still looking for that perfect holiday gift? Perhaps you need a gift for a fellow crocheter. Or you could forward this email to someone who might need suggestions for your own holiday gift.

Kristin Omdahl joins us today to share her top gift ideas. You will find the perfect book, hook, or blocking tool.

Here are some of Kristin's holiday gift ideas:

Unexpected Afghans by Robyn Chachula

I think this is the most beautiful collection of afghans I've ever seen. Period. Not only would the book make a wonderful gift, but if you have time to make any of the afghans FOR the gift, they would be a treasured keepsake for life.

The Finer Edge by Kristin Omdahl

All crocheters love reference books, so the book itself is a great gift to improve the skills repertoire of any crocheter. But the beauty of this book is you can take edgings and apply them to anything! You could even take store-bought gifts this season, and add a crochet edging, to add a handmade flare and personalized touch to your gifts.

The New Tunisian Crochet by Dora Orenstein

Tunisian crochet is really hot and on trend. If you know a crocheter who hasn't tried this technique, Dora is certainly the expert. Give them the best of the best's collection of gorgeous Tunisian patterns in this book.

Exquisite tools make wonderful gifts as well. Lantern Moon makes the most exquisite crochet hooks in rosewood and ebony. I love mine dearly. The company is owned by some of the most wonderful people I've met in the industry, too, which makes me love their products even more.

And to finish off the gift beautifully, take a look at the beautiful silk cases for the hooks, too.

An interchangeable set of tunisian hooks would make an amazing gift for a special friend. My favorite is Tulip's.

Every knitter and crocheter needs good blocking tools, too. They may already have a blocking board, pins and wires, but everyone needs a good delicate wash! Give the gift that keeps on giving by treasuring and preserving the fibers of your crafting friends' handwork. Wrapture can be given in travel size (20 hand washes) or full size (95 hand washes). It's all natural, no rinse, and smells divine with the addition of essential oil of night blooming jasmine.

Also we have a Wrapture holiday gift box that includes a few single use pods of Wrapture and our brand new product: Wrapture Fragrant Balm. This all-in-one product can be used as a fragrant perfume as well as to moisturize dry skin. It is all natural, alcohol free, contains no preservatives, color or petroleum and is vegan, making it ideal for people with allergies and sensitivities to artificial fragrance, chemicals and traditional eau de toilette sprays.

Looking for a yarn gift? My favorites this season are Drew Emborsky's Sarcastic: 50/50 blend of Peruvian cotton and tencel. The semi-solid colors are hand dyed and give great color definition. This is a machine washable and dryable yarn so it would be perfect for baby projects, afghans, hats, or anything for the rough and tumble crowd on your gift list.

For the gift recipient who loves natural fibers and is willing to hand wash every single time, my favorite this season is Bijou Bliss by Bijou Basin Ranch, a yak/cormo wool blend hand dyed in brilliant bright colors. I've used it for several projects, including the shawl on the cover of Seamless Crochet, the cowl in Crochet So Fine (a one ball project) and for a project in the new crochet book I'm currently designing for release Spring 2015.

And my favorite for self-striping yarn is Freia Yarn's Ombre. These beauties only change color one time per skein. Depending on the weight you use, that could mean short yardage for worsted weight or a whopping 675 yards in lace weight with only one color change. The yarn is hand dyed and the colors are spectacular.

Warm regards,

Kristin
