Don't put away all of your crochet accessories this summer.
It may be too hot to wear your cardigans, hats, scarves, and socks, but crochet
jewelry is the perfect accessory whether heat waves are radiating off of the
sidewalk or the road is covered in snow.
Crochet jewelry works up incredibly quickly. This is one of
my favorite aspects, and I have been known to whip up a bracelet or necklace
the evening before a trip or event. And the small sizes of the pieces make them
great travel projects-perfect for crowded cars and airplane seats.
As you begin your next crochet jewelry project, here are
some of my favorite tips.
Play with stiffeners. Stiffened crochet motifs make gorgeous
necklaces and earrings and really show off their gorgeous shape. You can buy
premade stiffeners at your local craft store or create your own using start or
even glue. It can take a little practice to get the amount of stiffener or
application right, so make an extra motif to practice on. I didn't my first
time, and I ended up making a third motif when the second motif looked much
better than the first.
Many crochet jewelry projects are worked in thread. This
allows you to create intricate stitch patterns that are still small enough to
wear as jewelry. The small size of the thread and hook can easily strain your
eyes and neck, so make sure you are crocheting in an area with sufficient
light. The need for good light makes an excellent excuse when you want the
window seat. And don't forget to pay attention to your posture.
For a bit of sparkle, try crocheting with beads. When
crocheting with beads, most patterns will tell you how many beads to pre-string
on your thread or yarn. While it is possible to add more beads, it generally
requires cutting your yarn. So, it is always a good idea to string extra beads.
When you are stringing a large number of beads it is easy to miscount or even
crochet a few extra into your design.
