More Great Crochet Patterns

Dec 3, 2009

Crochet BeretI love when the new project samples for each issue of Interweave Crochet appear at the office. I wore the Pink Lady Scarf for at least 2 hours before boxing it up to send to the tech editor.

A couple of weeks ago, I spied a beautiful rose beret on the shelf behind me where we store all of the Interweave Knits, Knitscene, and Interweave Crochet sample projects for the current issues. This elegant hat matched my sweater perfectly so I tried it on. I was in love. I simply had to make one of my own.

I asked a coworker if she recognized the hat. She pulled out the Fall 2009 issue of Knitscene and turned to page 62. There it was, Crochet Bobble Beret by Robyn Chachula. Wait… the hat was crochet? I pulled it off again and carefully looked at the stitching. The ribbing around the base of the hat is knitted, but the majority of the hat is created with single crochet and bobbles. You could certainly crochet the ribbing in single crochet back loop only or slip stitch back loop only.

I also recently rediscovered the Herringbone Skirt from the Fall 2007 issue of Knitscene. It's available as an epattern through the Interweave Store. Hmm, I'll have to pull that one out as well.

Maltese Edging

Knitscene is not the only other Interweave magazine to include crochet. PieceWork magazine is holding its Crochet-Lace Challenge II, to re-create the Malteses Edging (above) from Weldon's Practical Needlework. You'll find the instructions and guidelines in the November/December issue, along with results of the first Crochet Challenge, where readers were challenged to re-create two lace patterns. And that's not all! You'll find an article on Karen E. Hooton's search for the origins of broomstick lace and a pattern for a christening bag to knit and crochet.

So next time you see Knitscene or PieceWork on the newsstand, pick it up and flip through the pages, or better yet pick up a subscription for yourself or a friend for the holidays. You can check out the Knitscene or PieceWork preview page online. Or check out the Interweave Store to see what new crochet projects have been added. You never know what new project you will find or what interesting fact you will learn.

Best wishes,

Toni
