8 easy steps: A Motif Project with Minimal Assembly

Forest Flower PulloverDeep in the dark recesses of my closet there resides a bucket of afghan motifs I long ago lost interest in assembling. Motif projects can be so intimidating because of the whole assembling step. But there's a better way: Joining motifs as you go. No stack of motifs waiting to be assembled. Instead, there's the excitement of watching a project change and grow as you join the motifs.  There are many ways to join motifs as you go, but today I am going to focus on Kristin Omdahl's Forest Flower Pullover from the Spring 2009 issue of Interweave Crochet. A ring of colorful blossoms encircle the neckline of this delightful tunic. This eye-catching neckline is made up of between 14 and 17 motifs that are joined as you go. No pile of identical motifs to join later! So let's walk through joining a motif.

1. Work the first motif completely (pictured just barely at upper right). Work the next motif through Round 2. On Round 3 of this motif, you will join it to the first motif. First, work your first bobble and chain 1.
  2. Slip stitch in the chain-3 space of the first motif .

3. Chain 1, bobble in the working motif, chain 2, then slip stitch in the next chain-5 space of the adjoining motif. Now your new working motif is joined to the previous motif in 2 places.   4. Chain 2, single crochet in next chain-5 space of the working motif. (Be sure to keep clear on the working motif and the adjoining motif. This is one of the most confusing parts of joining motifs.)
  5. Chain 2 and slip stitch in the next chain space of the adjoining motif.

6. Chain 2 and single crochet in the next space of the working motif.   7. Chain 2 and slip stitch in the next chain space of the adjoining motif.   8. Chain 2 and start working bobbles. Continue working the remainder of the round.
