Chain Reaction: When You Give to Others, We Give to Others

Chain Reaction Afghan Project: Giving More to Others

Crocheters are givers. We just can't help ourselves.

That's why we love the Chain Reaction Afghan Project, designed for the very purpose of making an afghan (or two) to give away. The Chain Reaction Afghan Project is a yearlong print and online project that brings together the work of professional and emerging designers in a single afghan. The completed afghan will be auctioned off with proceeds going to a select charity.

But our afghan is just the start of the Chain Reaction. You can carry it forward by making your own afghans for donation. Plus now, when you give away an afghan to a charity of your choice, we'll give a donation to Warm Up America, a charity that joins small pieces of crochet and knit together into afghans and other projects that are given away to those in need.

By pooling your efforts with those of others, you can create an afghan in no time. The squares in the Chain Reaction Afghan Project are designed to help you explore new crochet techniques, so we understand if you want to explore all that richness on your own. Maybe everyone in your crochet group can work on the same square at the same time, helping one another along with the techniques - think how many afghans you could make that way!

You can work the whole afghan or select certain squares to coordinate your own afghan pattern. Robyn's Chachula's Lotus Blossom square would be fabulous worked in various colors, then joined together for an afghan. Or combine Robyn's square with Lisa Naskrent's Picture Frame square.

And here's where we pay it forward. For every afghan you donate, alone or as a group, we will donate $5 to Warm Up America (for up to a total of 500 afghans). Every afghan must feature squares from the Chain Reaction Afghan Project. All other choices are your own: the yarn, the number of people who participate, the size of the afghan. When you are done, send an email to that includes a picture of the afghan, the group you donated it to and why, and information about the crocheters who made the afghan. Please put Chain Reaction Afghan Project in the subject line and send to crochet@interweave.com.

You'll find patterns for ten of the squares in the Summer 2010 and Fall 2010 issues (five squares in each issue). You'll want to be sure to gather the Winter 2010 and Spring 2011 issues, where you'll find ten more patterns, all designed by CrochetMe Readers.

Best,

P.S. If you're ready to crochet the Chain Reaction Afghan right now, you can download the free eBook with all of the crochet patterns and instructions for how to crochet squares together for a blanket that will wow your friends and family!

Do you have plans for publishing all the chain reaction patterns online?  I just received my first issue of Interweave crochet and this was the first I learned about this project and I would love to participate in making these squares, etc..  I searched your website for the patterns, but have failed to find them listed.  Your help is appreciated.

Hi Cathy,

Yes, all of the afghan patterns plus the edging will be available in an eBook next month. Keep an eye out for Marcy's blog, and she will give you all the information for where to find the eBook for download.

Best wishes,

Toni

I purchased the Chain Reaction Afghan Project Crochet-Along video and it said  that the pattern for each afghan square is included!  I probaby not that savy at doing this but I have viewed the whole video and do not find the patterns anywhere.  Under Print all I find is a picture of each square to print.  Can anyone help me?
