Sarah's New Year's Resolutions

Jan 6, 2011

Here we are, at the start of a new year. Again!

That means it is time for a few plans and resolutions, yes? I was afraid you would say that.

How did all this get here?
Spacer 10x10 pixels Resolution #1: Work from my stash. I say this every year. It is my equivalent of the "lose 10 pounds" cliché. But every year I mean it a little bit more. Gifts, though, are an exception to the rule, as gift recipients often have tastes or needs that aren't fulfilled by stash yarn. This is a pretty handy exception to have when gifts are about the only thing you make. This leads me to my next resolution...

Resolution #2: Craft selfishly. I've been hoarding yarn for things for me for years (which leads to the Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy issue alluded to above). It is about time I use some of it. Resolutions 1 and 2 should help keep each other in line. In theory.

When did I start these?
Spacer 10x10 pixels Resolution #3: Finish projects! As in, the ones that I started nevermind-how-long-ago.

Where did this come from?

Resolution #4: Spin at least 4oz of fiber every month. This is really a sneaky way of getting around Resolutions 1 and 2. It is working from stash, and condensing the fluffy fiber into yarn makes for more room in the stash closet. Plus, it is new yarn! Yay loopholes! It is also a great excuse for avoiding Resolution 3.

Resolution #5: Teach someone to crochet. Maybe go to a school and teach kids, or go to a shelter and teach anyone who wants to learn, or maybe both. I am also planning on teaching my husband. He doesn't know this yet. I'm hoping I can do it without him really noticing. You might think that wouldn't be possible, if you didn't know him. I'll start by replacing all of the bathroom reading material with the Harmony Guides!.

Have a happy new year full of crocheting!

Until next time,

The above is so very true and cracked me up! I too spend a lot of time procrastinating rather than producing. Thanks for making me laugh!

Haha! Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy ! SABLE!

That has got to become the widely accepted term to describe this mania... But what a wonderful mania it is! Don't we love to delight and dream amidst our lovely stashes :)

Thanks for the laughs!!  Wonderful :)

Great funny way to start my morning! this past year I have worked very consistentty from my stash with great results. I have also started giving away things to those I like and maybe want to remember me later, if that makes sense? not very close friends but those who matter, things I know they specifically want or like..  Also giving yarn/fabric from my stash in  pay it forward fashion to those who need or want it. yeah, it does feel good but honestly, being able to reduce a really SABLE is even better!!  and finishing projects I have also been trying to do, less successfully, I am afraid. and my last rez is to try to challenge myself a little. it is so easy to knock out face cloths, slippers and kimono sleeve shrugs that I tend to keep to those things...thanks again for great article! cindy

Oh, wow, did this speak to me...or was it sound like me?!! Any way, I've made the same resolutions and I've already dug out several unfinished projects to complete. YAY!

Ha, ha, Sarah.  I'm with you on numbers 2 and 5, especially 5.  Have a great year!

Sooooo true!  It makes me smile.  Imagine how many crocheters feel exactly the same way.  Happy 2011.

I almost spit out my coffee, thanks to this one, Sarah!  Oh wow, you know me!  Ha ha ha...  So, I guess I don't have to tell you about the jammed-full huge box of "stuff" down in my basement?  It's full of scraps of fabric from finished sewing projects, balls and skeins of yarn, quilt batting, and various other textile bits.

Good luck with the resolutions!

These are great! Our spinning guild had a yardage challenge last year and I have over three miles of hand spun on hand. I have added a resolution to the list: never leave home without it. I have begun taking small projects with me so even if I have to wait in a long line, I can be happily stitching away. But I don't stitch and drive.

I'll be waiting to hear about hubby and crochet.

Great resolutions! I share many of them, especially using up the stash and finishing projects. I would love to learn how to spin yarn, that seems like so much fun but I have not learned how. I have tought a few people how to crochet and it is deffinately a rewarding and fuffilling experience for both of us.

Yep, I've been known to leave the magazines I want my husband to pay attention to in the bathroom as well! Lately it has been more crochet magazines so that he may possibly say something like, "That sweater is very pretty, I think you should make it" and yay! it would mean getting just the right yarn! One can hope...

Thanks for sharing!

I agree with 1-3 above. I have been knitting sweaters for Knit for Kids and hats for children's hospital from my stash. I have successfully limited my purchase of yarns to when I run out while on vacation. But I still have quite a lot of yarn. 2010 was the year of collecting patterns to knit for myself so maybe 2011 will be the year of knitting for me.

In working to resolve my stash build up, I took pen and paper in hand and made an inventory of all my yarn, classifying it by weight, then listing each yarn by Brand, and included skein/hank details.  I also indicated if they had dye lots or no dye lots. It took an afternoon, and was quite enlightening. The list now makes going through patterns much easier.

Which brings me to resolution #2: It's much easier reviewing my stash inventory list when looking at a pattern to make. It's like shoppng in my own private yarn store.

And Resolution # 3: I made a list of my PIPs (projects in process) and indicated what was left to do. I have four on the list and I resolve to finish the cream/camel/grey sweater for my mother, the red crochet pullover for me, and the boucle afghan in teal, turquoise and navy for my son this year! (The fourth project is a continuing one of crocheting 50 stars in white cotton for a community project. I'm up to 20!)

Thanks for this website. I really appreciate the no-nonsense approach.

I'm doing something similar. Last year I was part of 2 yarn clubs, which did not stop me from buying additional yarn as I mistakenly thought it would. So, this year I am working from my stash, and seeing what things I can finish from the long long ago.

Mostly that means that I have blocking a sweater I started in 2007! Finishing things is awesome!

I had to laugh. So, I'm not the only one after all. I still have a granny square project that I started when my children were in middle school. My oldest is 37. I've moved a few time but I still have the finished squares, the partial done ones and the yarn, so I guess there is still hope. I'm not so sure about all the color combinations, a bit outdated as you can imagine. Thanks for reminding me. BUT, my yarns are very well organized.

Finishing projects is always my weak point. My boyfriend jokes about it. There's just so many things I want to knit!

It's almost creepy--but definitely hilarious--how your posted "Resolutions" mimicked my own...yet, comfortingly confirming, LOL!  (With the exception of #4, although I began looking into spinning lessons this past year).  I'm currently initiating crochet (and knitting) lessons with a couple of friends, and my son (check out his blog, Atypical Yarn at atypicalyarn.blogspot.com) has been asked to teach a couple of his friends....wow!

OMigosh! I feel your 'pain'.  To keep this yrs resolution to declutter my basement, I started clearing a path and moved three boxes thinking they were filled with memorabilia.  No, they were cleverly disguised boxes of yarn that I don't remember ever buying.  Bright yellows, vivid peacock blues, and my favorite-kelly green boucle.  I wonder what's in the box labelled summer tops? LOL!

I totally concur with Sarah's resolutions! If my stash grows much larger, there won't be room for me in the house!

I particularly like your idea of teaching your husband to crochet without him really noticing. Along similar lines: my ex-husband was very proud of his ability to speak extemporaneously on any subject. To test his ability, he was challenged to speak for a half hour about crochet, a subject he knew absolutely nothing about -- so he proceeded to do so. Hopefully, Sarah's husband, if similarly challenged, will be able to speak more knowledgeably!

Sarah - I love getting the crochet me blog posts anyway, but your posts are good for a giggle too - thanks!

I love all of your resolutions. After putting all of my yarn and supplies from around my house into one pile, I realized that I have a problem.

I find nothing more beautiful then the rows and rows of yarn at Michaels. All those colours and textures, how can you not buy more?

Your post has inspired me to use up some of my personal stash and try and finish up some of my half finished projects.

Thanks for the inspiration and good luck teaching your husband!
