Yarn Spotlight Addition: Spring 2012

Mar 9, 2012

In the Spring 2012 issue of Interweave Crochet, Yarn Spotlight focuses on cotton blends for warm weather wear. See the print issue for reviews of five more yarns: Hemp for Knitting Cashmere Canapa, Classic Elite Classic Silk, Filatura Di Crosa Brilla, Misti Alpaca Tonos Pima Silk, and Cascade Yarns Sierra.

All swatches are worked in the Woven Arrowheads pattern by Lily Chin, a square from the Chain Reaction Afghan Project. You can download patterns for all the afghan squares for free.
Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece

CONTENT: 80% cotton, 20% merino wool PUT-UP: 3.5 oz, 100 g/215 y, 197 m CONSTRUCTION: 4 plies of 3-ply CARE: handwash cool, lay flat to dry COLOR: CW-120 honey butter, CW-570 Malibu blue HOOK: H-8 (5 mm)

This terrific yarn is a great budget-conscious go-to yarn for garments you wear often. After some initial grappling with strandiness, the hook finds synergy with the yarn and things move along to create a smooth fabric that doesn't mind showing off some stitches. The wool gives it memory that makes it work for skirts, which can stretch a bit with all-cotton yarn.

PERFECT FOR SKIRTS, SHELLS, CARDIGANS.

Rowan Creative Linen

CONTENT: 50% linen, 50% cotton PUT-UP: 3.53 oz, 100 g/219 y, 200 m CONSTRUCTION: 5 plies of 2-ply CARE: handwash cold, lay flat to dry COLOR: 621 natural 635 stormy HOOK: H/8 (6mm)

This sturdy yarn, with the crispness of linen and the softness of cotton, creates a rustic fabric with good stitch definition.  It would love to grow up to be a cardigan for evening walks on the beach.

PERFECT FOR GARMENTS FOR WOMEN, MEN, OR CHILDREN; SUMMER AFGHAN
Lion Brand Martha Stewart Crafts Cotton Hemp

CONTENT: 65% cotton, 35% hemp PUT-UP: 1.75 oz, 50 g/66 y, 60 m CONSTRUCTION: 27-ply CARE: machine wash cool, machine dry gentle and low COLOR: 524 oyster, 510 twilight blue HOOK: J-10 (6 mm)

This sturdy yarn calls for a sturdy hand. Its 27 plies are a tad unruly at times, but an aluminum or stiff plastic hook, along with rhythmic stitching, will keep it in line. It is happiest with straightforward stitches. The resulting fabric is sturdy, stiff even with a somewhat smaller hook.

PERFECT FOR BASKETS, RUGS, PLACE MATS

Enjoy your warm-weather crochet! We'd love to see pictures of your finished crochet projects. You can share them in the Member Photo Gallery.

Best,

Marcy

I don't see a yarn weight number for these, either here or in the magazine. Did I miss something? The yarn weight would help to compare them.
