Obi Scarf: Surface Single Crochet

Aug 29, 2013

Surface single crochet is a great way to embellish your stitchwork.  In the Fall 2013 issue of Interweave Crochet, Shelby Allaho's lovely Obi Scarf uses it to very fine effect.

The scarf is worked lengthwise in double crochet, and surface single crochet is worked through the horizontal bar on the WS of the sts. Because the scarf is worked in rows, a surface stripe can be worked over every other row.

To work the surface stitch, join your contrast color yarn and insert the hook through the back horizontal bar as if it were the top of a stitch. Pull up a loop and complete the stitch as for single crochet.

Surface stitches can be worked in other ways as well, as long as you are picking up the same part of each stitch across (to maintain even stitches). It can even be worked in freeform shapes to sketch fun designs across your fabrc! It's a great way to add dimension and depth to a project. Enjoy!

Happy Stitching,

Sarah
