Crafty Weekend

May 8, 2006

It was non-stop creating chez Crochet me this weekend.

Argyle BacksplashWe spent all day Saturday tiling our kitchen back splash. I thought a four-colour argyle pattern would look cool, and would be a neat reversal of creativity for me -- usually I look at things like mosaics and architectural features and think about using the inspiration in yarn. With this mosaic, it was really cool to integrate my fibery life into our home. And in that way that makes me love him so much, Mr Cm took my blurted-out idea and did the math and planning I have no attention span for. And this is part of what we did. In total, we tiled 10 solid diamonds to cover the 23 square feet of back splash (it'll be grouted next weekend sometime). There are more process photos on Flickr, if you're interested.

Shrug Progress

I worked a little on the shrug, but still haven't gotten to the decreases on the first sleeve. It's not so much that it's slow crocheting, but more that I've been going in a million directions of late. But, since Jen asked for an update, here ya go. If you click to see the larger version, you'll see how pretty the stitch pattern is. It's kind of unusual - the clusters are worked around double crochet stitches, which is how they end up on an angle. I love how it's coming out, and I'm really enjoying the stitching. Jen also asked about the yarn colour - it's Raspberry.

Finally, meet Sally. I've been wanting to make a sock monkey for months, and took the time yesterday afternoon. I dropped Mr Cm off at the airport (the lucky man's in Tokyo this week), ran some errands, came home, made some amazingly delicious tea that Annette sent me, and fired up the sewing machine. Next time I won't stuff so much, but overall I'm so psyched about her. She may look like a linebacker, but that doesn't mean she isn't a girly girl.

Sally the Sock Monkey

You might be wondering why I named her Sally, and why first, considering her burly masculinity, I decided she's a girl. Well. I followed the instructions in Bazaar Bizarre, and they said to use Fray Check or clear nail polish on the crotch area to prevent the sock from running under the stress of being stuffed. Never one to follow instructions thoroughly, and occasionally one not to consider why instructions instruct as they do, I used dark pink nail polish. I'll give you a second to consider the dark pink nail polish in the crotch area.

Now. I spent the summers of 1985-1989 at overnight camp in the Catskill Mountains. It was one of the most formative settings of my young life. I think it was during my second summer there, when I was 10-years-old, that one of my counselors told us that when she was younger, she and her friends used to refer to “that time of the month” as “their friend Sally visiting.” And so you see, the name choice was obvious.

The argyle rocks... this is where we have something in common with the old lady who lived in a shoe. We want to live inside patterns of argyle and such...

The young lady who lived in a sock...

Cute sock monkey... but I'd rather not see the crotch. :P

Yeah. There's a reason I posed it with a convenient shadow. (It's actually not all that noticeable.)

Groovy backsplash! Love it! Someday when we do the kitchen over and add an addition, I'm going to do a backsplash. That must have been loads of fun though.

Once again, I want to borrow Mr. CM, please. If you get the chance to see my current backsplash any time soon, you'll know why.

on May 8, 2006 7:12 PM

Thanks, Amie! It was loads of fun to come up with it, and to choose the right colours, and to find the right tiles. It was fun to start laying it out, and to stick on the first diamond or so. And then we started to ache from the awkward angle, and by the end of the night we were so tired from the long day that it was all we could do not to mess up the pattern. But we absolutely love it. And sticking in the dark X tiles never stopped being fun. (For me.)

Sally is awesome! I am a sock monkey making addict. :)
I never thought of using nail polish on them though.
I always just pick up any runs and re-knit them like a dropped stitch. *shrug*

Nail polish could save time if you had a sock that was really prone to run.

I think Sally rocks! :D

Tamara - Your site is FABULOUS. So much sock monkey love! Thanks for your comment! (I used cheap socks; they would've run all the way up if I hadn't gotten sloppy with the pink nail polish. :)

Considering how key both math and planning are to crochet design, and considering this magazine is supposed to serve as inspiration to maker/builder types...

don't you think it is a little bit incongruous to support the notion that math is hard and that having a husband do it for you is awesomeness squared? Even if you had taken it the point of saying Mr Cm was giving you a few lessons... reminded you about pythagoreans's theorum... something?

This, though... how disappointing that you are furthering an empty-headed stereotype that leans on the big brains of her man, instead of embracing the DIY spirit and learning how to, in fact, do it yourself.

That backsplash is freaking incredible! I am totally thinking we need to copy your idea in our new kitchen! (that is ours... for real- yay! closing as soon as they can do our mortgage paperwork)

Pink nail polish... hahaaaaa seriously?

That last comment from Josi is getting under my skin- just because your husband did the layout does not mean that you are embracing an 'empty-headed stereotype.' You had the brilliant idea of doing the backsplash this way, he strategized how to get it done. That is a MARRIAGE- you each have talents to bring to the game. One is not more important than another.

Ignore the haters, Kim. You rock.

Ah, she who equates a comment about my attention span to a Barbie-esque "math is hard!" Spending hours measuring an uneven wall and calculating motif dimensions and cutting out triangles of tiles on mesh is boring, and my patient husband gets it done faster and less painfully than I do. At the same time, he would poke his eyes out from the boredom of sticking all those tiles to the wall, and was happy for my partnership.

I'll leave it at that, Josi, and ask that you keep your complaints about my character to your own blog.

on May 9, 2006 8:58 AM

Thanks, Jess. And no, YOU rock.

I made no complaints about your character, Kim. I questioned the message you were sending.

yes, work can be boring. That's true. Fiddling around to get it right is tedious. That's a part of DIY and design, and that was my point.

I did keep my points about your charcter to my blog and separate the 2 from my comment here. My comment here was about the message an editor of a DIY magazine is sending to her readers when she eschews the "math and planning".

and no, I won't keep my criticisms to myself. This is a public forum for crochet advocates. I qualify and so do my opinions.

I contributed a lot to the beginnings of this magazine, and having opinions about it, and crochet, was something you respected until I publicly took issue with you not coming through with your side of a bargain and publicly stated I felt I was getting screwed a little by you.

There is no good reason for me to hold my opinions back.

i love the backsplash! mine is nice but not as cool as yours. I love argyle patterns. I was like totally an argyle girl back in high school. So preppy ya know!! Keep your chin up Kim, there are many who love ya!

Ha! Thanks, Marlo. She's too overstuffed to be very squishy, but she's happy just being cute. ;)

Hey Kim! I'll tell ya, the pink nail polish is understandable and funny. I don't know what that says about me, but... And by the way, some of the negativity on this particular thread is getting me down. I also let my husband do things that I don't like/feel like doing. I don't think that makes me less of a DIY or independant kind of gal. The great thing about being married is, you don't have to do it all yourself. I also wanted to thank you for having such a great website. It feels like a fun family that I can relate to--And no one here will make fun of me for crocheting. I look at all that you have accomplished and I am inspired by it. Thank you for sharing all of your wisdom with us!

on May 10, 2006 9:20 AM

Hi Lynne - I'm glad you get the pink nail polish and find it funny! What makes us all independent and crafty kinds of people is our comfort in our individuality and (ideally) our acceptance of the differences between us that stem from that. Don't let the negativity get you down! I, for one, plan to go apply that pink nail polish to my toes...

Kim, thanks for the shout-out. You shamed me into both crocheting and posting to my blog, both of which have been horribly neglected of late. LOVE the tile work! You inspire to me to spruce up my kitchen a bit. And the shrug looks great... I look forward to seeing it finished!
