I really, really like the stitch pattern in this design. It creates an interesting texture and is super soft and drapey.

I've done a few more rows at this point, and am waffling about whether I'll need more yarn...

Oooh. That stitch is fantastic! I have the Baby Silk too, and it is so luxurious. (and the best part is that it is totally affordable!) Man, you are going to have an awesome shrug. I am jealous!

Update: I won't need more yarn. Phew.

Robyn - Don't be jealous, crochet it with me!

Making this using Baby Silk would put this shrug in my price range- would this yarn substitution keep the pattern the same? (Meaning, I am such a novice that I wouldn't know how to modify it to get the correct gauge)

It all depends on your gauge, Veronica. If you crochet to the same gauge the pattern calls for, you're good to go (I did, and so I haven't needed to do any math to adjust the pattern). To make a gauge swatch, chain 30 and follow the instructions to make Row 1, except you'll end up with fewer clusters. Work according to the pattern for about 8 rows, and then measure to see if your gauge is right. If you crochet tightly and you have too many clusters or rows per 2 inches, you might just be able to follow the instructions for the next size larger (though your finished product might end up slightly too large, depending). If you crochet loosely and you have too few clusters or rows per 2 inches, you might be able to follow the instructions for the next size smaller (though your product might end up slightly too small, depending).
