Solomon's Knot Tutorial

Jun 24, 2009

Hey crocheters,

Our Summer issue of Interweave Crochet features a beautiful summery pattern, Dolores.  This is a great summer piece, easy to layer over a tank or swimsuit.

It's made up of Solomon's Knot, which is a lovely, lacy stitch that works up quickly. If you haven't worked with this stitch before, it can seem kind of mysterious. We've included downloadable instructions for the Solomon's Knot in our free Advanced Crochet Stitches eBook, along with tons of other great stitch instructions, but these step-by-step photos may help out:

Start with a single crochet in the designated stitch. When you complete the stitch, pull up the loop about 1/2 inch:

Solomons Knot Step 1

Draw a loop through to make a loose single crochet, then insert the hook between the front loop and the "hump" in the back:

complete this second single crochet by pulling a loop through:

Now you have a loose single crochet, with a tight one at the top. Pull the loop of this tight single crochet up about 1/2 inch:

make another loose single crochet:

and secure it with a tight single crochet:

Then work a single crochet in the designated stitch on the base row:

Pull up the loop of this single crochet as before to start the next Solomon's Knot stitch:

On the second row, you'll have these airy Solomon's Knot's to work into, rather than the base row. You work your securing single crochet in the tight single crochet at the center -- or the "peak" of the stitch:

Then pull up the loop of this stitch to begin the next Solomon's Knot:

And, voila! You're on your way to making your own Dolores!

Be sure to post pictures of your FOs. We'd love to see how you make it your own!

I was reading an old issue of Interweave crochet, and it said to go online to download the Dolores pattern. The pattern looks gorgeous, and I have never tried this technique before, so my interest was piqued to say the least. I found this tutorial, but when I try to click on the link to the pattern, it inevitably tells me "access denied" even when I am logged into knitting daily, which is where the link goes. I understand that this pattern was only offered free for a limited time, but now it does not seem to exist at all, not even as a pay pattern! I hope that, since it WAS free at one time, Crochet Me and Marcy Smith will consider posting the pattern for free once more.

Thank you,

I concur agree with your comment Roxanne!!  I bought the Summer 2009 issue for the pattern - and it said to go on line; found that it was no longer available.

PLEASE!!  Can we have you post once again??  Or is someone willing to share the pattern for those of us who are interested?

Thank you!

I recently got a copy of the Summer 2009 Interweave Crochet magazine.  The  Dolores pattern says it's a free download but when I click on the link, it says

"Access Denied

You do not have permissions to perform the requested action."

Then I noticed this page says it's free until September 17th (I'm assuming 2009).

If it's not too expensive, I'd pay for it.

Is there another link to use to get this pattern?  I have the perfect yarn for it and would really like to make it for a Mother's Day gift.

Dolores is available in the pattern store here: (and right now it's on sale!)

If you love Solomon's Knot, be sure to pick up our Summer 2013 issue, which has a special feature on Solomon's Knot, with several patterns.
