Big bag, little bag

Oct 1, 2009

Have you seen the Fortune Cookie Bag in the Fall issue of Interweave Crochet? Very clever, I think. And the size is just right for a wallet, phone, keys.

But maybe you want to carry a little moreā€”or less. Here are some options.

Bigger and smaller.

When I was testing the pattern, I used sock yarn to make this:

Cute, huh? It's about 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall, closed.

It's made of Patons Kroy Socks Jacquards (color 55611). Because it's washable wool & nylon, it doesn't felt. Which is probably just as well, since it's already small.
Look at it from the bottom:

How cool is that? This wee bag is big enough to hold notions such as stitch markers. Me, I like to keep it by my computer, so I can toss in bad mojo. End of the day, I just take it outside & shake it out. You probably need one of those, too.

I also made a big bag out of feltable wool (Lamb's Pride Bulky in colors Red Hot Passion M0197, Mulberry M-162 and Foxglove M-61).
Here it is prefelted, turned inside out and ready to go into a hot bath:

In this state, it measures 10 inches wide and 17.5 inches from bottom to top unfolded. The handle, shown in the top photo fresh off the hook, is stretched (from 24 inches to 38 inches), then sewn onto the bag before felting.

Here it is, post-felting:

It measures 9 inches wide by 17 inches unfolded; the pouch part is 9 inches by 8 inches, giving enough room for wallet, phone, keys AND a small project. Note that it didn't shrink very much, but the fabric got denser, so you don't have to line it. I'd suggest making the handle a little longer, because it did shrink, down to 31.5 inches, making it about 15 inches from shoulder down.

Here's the bottom view:

It's a pretty fun bag. And did I mention that it's fast to make? It is very fast. When you're done, it's good for quick trip to the store or a night out at the game. It's good for fiber night with your fiber buddies. And it would be a swell slumber party bag--just big enough for jammies, toothbrush, iPod.

Happy crocheting,
