Craftivism: Crochet a Scarf for Special Olympics

Sep 1, 2010

The 2011 Special Olympics Washington State Winter Games are in March 2011. The folks there are on a mission to give a hand-stitched scarf to every athlete, as they have in years past.

The group is still organizing itself, but their site is now updated, with color selections and a link to patterns (you'll find that here). The official website, which will have deadlines and links to state scarf projects, is here. Further details, like deadlines and shipping information, are slated to arrive Nov. 1 here. The site does note this: "There are some Special Olympics State Programs (for example: Washington and Michigan) that have created their own individual scarf projects, which may have different colors, deadlines, etc.  While these are completely separate from the Special Olympics USA Scarf Project, they support certain State Programs and therefore we encourage you to consider supporting both the Special Olympics USA Scarf Project and scarf projects from individual State Programs."

Meanwhile, here is an organization that gathers scarves year-round for holiday distribution to World War II veterans: Knit-Your-Bit. It borrows the phrase from the urging for support during the war, but it is open to both crochet and knitting. The site includes patterns in both knit and crochet. Be sure to check out the FAQ, but if you have made scarves for Special Olympics based on earlier criteria, this would be a fine place to send them.

Thanks for all your good work.

According to the website, the "Due date for scarves is February 25, 2011," not September 30. I believe the September 30 deadline is for one of the contests they have going on.

Other sites state that the color(s) for the 2011 project will be announced on  10/1.  How can they already have 750 scarves.

What are the colors for 2011.  A Georgia site is using red and white for their olympics but is this the same.

Some time agon I saw information on scarves for Washington State - Cherry Red and White -- I have already crocheted 10 scarves in those colors, but I have not been able to confirm those are the appropriate colors or where to send them.  Can someone help?
