In the Spring 2011 issue of Interweave Crochet, Yarn Spotlight focuses on kid-friendly yarns. By "kid-friendly," we mean both yarns that are great for making kid garments and yarns that are great for kids who are learning to crochet. Here are three more yarns.

Shepherd Worsted Lorna's Laces
amount: 113 g / 4oz/ 225 y / 206 m content: 100% superwash wool care: machine wash delicate, cool and dry low color: Beverly hook: 7 / 4.5mm-J-10 / 6 mm
(This is the blue/green yarn at the center and outer edge at of the Ojo di Dios or God's eye at left; the yellow is Classic Elite's Seedling, reviewed in the issue.) This hand-dyed yarn has medium-length color changes that
are fabulous for teaching crochet, because the stitches on the previous row will be a different color, making them easy to see. This three-ply yarn is sturdy,
standing up to several pull-outs without fuzzing (ask me how I know).
The resulting fabric is soft and pliable, great for a
variety of garments. It's available in a staggering 96 multi colors
(including Robot Overlord, Turtle Rodeo and Unicorn Parade) and 50
solid colors. If you like, you can crochet a solid-color sweater and
let your little crocheter make multicolor pockets to sew on.
Perfect for: both teaching crochet and making garments of all types

Limbo superwash Schoeller + Stahl (dist by Skacel)
amount: 50 g / 1.75 oz/ 136.75 y / 125 m content: 100% superwash virgin wool care: machine wash delicate, cool and dry low color: jeans 4533 hook: E-4/ 3.5mm- 7/4.5mm
This
superwash DK-weight 3-ply is sturdy and soft, just right for baby and kid garments worked at a medium gauge. Its pleasing palette of 40
colors lets you find just the right color for your project. It's fine
for teaching how to crochet as well, particularly for children with agile
fingers who can handle the finer weight.
Perfect for: Kids' garments of all kinds. |

Manos Maxima Manos del Uruguay
amount: 100 g / 3.5 oz/ 219 y / 200 m content: 100% extrafine merino wool care: machine wash warm, gentle; tumble dry low colors:
M2175 (shocking/pink); M2431 (acid / green); M2451 (helium / blue);
M2431 (ion / turquoise); M2060 (highlighter/yellow); M2169 (speeding
ticket/red) hook: E-4 / 3.5mm - G-6/ 4.0 mm
This lofty
single is sturdy enough to stand up to learning fingers. Since it's all
wool, it's great for felting, which blurs less-expert stitches. Plus
it's a lot of fun to felt. Young crocheters will love using this yarn
to make toys, accessories, bags for their electronic gadgets. The new semisolid bright colors are super kid-friendly. In my
house, our resident tween lit up when she saw this yarn and quickly
spirited it away to make a batch of friendship bracelets—using all the
colors. A grown-up who saw the yarn had a similar
reaction—but I didn't let her take it.
Perfect for: iPod cozies, bags, scarves, hats, hair accessories, whatever you can dream up.
