There is a certain wonderful danger to working in the Interweave building. I have read access to all of the samples of all of the projects featured in the recent issues of Interweave Crochet, Interweave Knits, Knitscene, and all of the special issues. They are often neatly folded on the shelves right behind me. 

The other day a flash of rose caught my attention. A perfect little hat was peeking out of a basket, and it perfectly matched my ensemble. I tried it on and fell in love. I simply had to make one. It wasn't a pattern I recognized immediately so I asked a friend if she was familiar with the project. She remembered the project almost immediately. It was the Crocheted Bobble Beret by Robyn Chachula from the Fall 2009 issue of Knitscene. And it was crocheted. Wait? The hat was crocheted!

 Sure enough, the ribbing is knitted but the majority of the hat is a single crochet and bobble crochet pattern. I began the hat that day.

Another interesting thing to note is that the visible side of the hat is what would normally be seen as the wrong side. This construction works beautifully as it puts the bobbles behind your work, and neatly out of the way, as you work in a spiral. Especially with the differing height between the single crochets and the bobble stitches it is very important to mark the first stitch of the round.

You can use a stitch marker. I didn't happen to have one handy, so I snipped a piece of thread from another project and wove it through the first stitches to mark my place. I think I may try using a single crochet back loop only or slip stitch back loop only ribbing in place of the knitted ribbing.
