 Babies and young children are some of my
favorite people to crochet for. The projects are fast, use less yarn, are a
great way to learn a new technique, and the recipients are thrilled-even if you
lost count of your rows and one sleeve did end up slightly longer than the
other. And there are a large number of little ones for whom I can crochet.
So it was with great excitement that I
accepted my copy of Robyn Chachula's latest book Baby Blueprint Crochet: Irresistible Projects for Little Ones, and
continued enthusiasm that I continue to pull this book out. I love Robyn's
patterns, both for adults and children. Her designs merge simple, clean lines
with intricate lace or beautifully textured stitches. And with Baby Blueprint Crochet she has primarily
focused not on the pastel colors we have come to associate with babies but
instead on bright, contrasting colors kids and adults will find irresistible.
Each pattern includes comprehensive
schematics and stitch diagrams. I appreciate stitch diagrams and frequently
find myself flipping between the written pattern and stitch diagram (visual
pattern) to better understand a stitch or shaping. If you have never used
stitch diagrams, Robyn will also walk you through the basics.
I already have a pair of Popsicle Boots
in the works. The first boot is finished, and I need to finish the second in
the next week. Next on my list is the Kyla Mod Blanket, but I also want to make
the Leah Pullover-this pullover uses top down crochet-, and I must use the frog
closures on the Stella Jacket (on the cover). Perhaps the Joni Jumper (at right) will become my next
project instead. I am fascinated by the bold use of color and the single motif.
It's so hard to choose.
Nikki at stitch.tac.sew might have the
right approach. She has decided to start her own Julie/Julia type project. She
is crocheting every project found in Baby
Blueprint. Her color version of the Hank Vest is brilliant for a little
girl, and the Snuggly Socks are perfectly adorable.
