Introduction
This lacy summer skirt was inspired by a gorgeous vintage bedspread pattern. I would never have the patience to crochet hundreds of tiny little squares out of thread to make an entire bedspread, so I designed this skirt as a way to capture the beauty of those patterns in a less painful project. Granted, this is still not a project most could do in a weekend, say, but as you complete each square you get a little thrill of accomplishment to string you along. With a slip or hand-sewn liner, you can wear this beautiful skirt anywhere, or pull it on over your bathing suit for a sexy cover up. Either way, you'll look gorgeous on those hot summer nights.

Notes
The Pattern
Pattern overview
Crochet eight daisy squares. On four of the daisy squares, attach thread and crochet one stretchy square on top of the daisy (Fig. A). On the other four squares, attach thread and crochet one stretchy square with attached triangle on top of the daisy square (Fig. B). The waistband will be crocheted directly on after pieces are joined.

Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring.
Round 1: Work 12 sc into ring, sl st in first sc to join.
Round 2: Ch 1 (counts as sc), sc in same st (first sc from previous row), work 2 sc in each st around, sl st in ch-1 to join. (24 sts)
Round 3: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), *skip next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1, dc in next sc, ch 1,* rep from * to * 6 more times, skip next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4 to join.
Round 4: Sl st into first ch-sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), work 3 dc into same ch-sp, ch 1, *skip next ch-sp, work 4 dc into next ch-sp, ch 1* rep from * to * 6 more times, sl st in top st of ch-3 to join. (8 groups of 4 dcs, which form the bases of the flower petals.)

Finishing
You should now have eight pieces, 4 like those in Fig. A (above) and four like those in Fig. B (above). Stack them on top of one another. If there are wide variations in the squares' dimensions, you may want to block the individual pieces before sewing them together. Whipstitch each A piece to the bottom of each B piece. You will have four panels that look like those in Fig. C. Matching up diagonal centers of the daisy squares in a straight line, whipstitch the four panels together (see Fig. D). Now fold Point A to Point B, and Point D to Point C and whipstitch the last seam. Attach thread at top to crochet the waistline.

Fig. C

Fig. D
Waistline
At this point, the waist will be very easily stretched out of shape because of the stitch and the way it's at a diagonal. Don't worry if it looks really wonky at this point. You are looking at the ends of the rows, and you will need to sc the end of each row plus the trough in between.
For Small, Medium, Large Only
Row 1: Work 114 (120, 126) sc evenly around waistline, following the approximate pattern of *crochet peak, crochet peak, crochet peak, crochet trough* repeat around.
Row 2: Dc in each sc around.
Row 3: Sc in each dc around.
For X-Large Only
Row 1: Work 132 sc evenly around waistline, following the approximate the pattern of *crochet peak, crochet peak, crochet peak, crochet peak, crochet trough* repeat around.
Row 2: Dc in each sc around.
Row 3: Sc in each dc around.
Drawstring
Ch 200 (212, 224, 236)
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in each ch across to end. Fasten off.

I love this!!! So dainty and gorgeous!
Hi Rachel, I am new to crochetme.com, and I must admit, this is a most breathtakingly beautiful skirt pattern!
I have seen many skirt patterns and this one is definantly the "IT" skirt of spring and summer 2009!
And since I don't wear slacks, this will be my special treasure--although I'll wear mine a little longer--either past the calf or to the ankles,I will make a few more squares to add length.
I hope you won't mind if I adopt this pattern for my new scarf and beret. I love the daisy, it is so fresh and innovative, much more updated, hip and creative than the "granny square".
I am going to rock this skirt with a matching scarf and beret! Thanks for sharing with us! I would love to add you to my buddy list!
I love this. I have a sept wedding...is this dressy enough I could wear it to a wedding or is more casual?
Very nice - dainty is an excellent word. Very pretty!
I absolutely love it! How did you come up with it? You are very talented. Its ia very lovely.
I love it! This will definately be among my summer projects.
Thank you for sharing.
Its gorgeous...I can't wait to start!
Thank you for sharing :)
Really nice job you did on that skirt. It's very lovely!
How beautiful! I can't wait to start it-I may just make another one, but try a different tablecloth motif instead of the daisy. Do you have any suggestions for the yarn-I checked the Patons website and they don't list Bumblebee. I guess they have discontinued it.
There is quite a bit still on Ebay
I love this and tried to contact Rachel with the email address you have given to try and get permission to make one for sale on my site. Unfortunately, the email address is non-existent or incorrect.
Anyone know how I can reach her?

You can get Paton's Bumblebee at SmileysYarns.com, and it's only $1.50 a skein.
I'm using some random glittery black yarn I found around the house somewhere.
Thank you thank you thank you! I've seen so many nice crocheted skirt patterns lately, but they were just not quite right for me. this one is gorgeous! it made me *gasp*. thank you so much for sharing it.
Here I've been checking this site hourly to see if the new issue was up, then I have a busy weekend and forget to check and I miss it. Thanks for all the kind comments, it was so much fun designing the skirt, the thought of other people making it is pretty cool. If you have any questions at all, please email me. You can reach me at roquemoma@yahoo.com. And for the yarn question, I got my Paton's Bumblebee at Smiley's Yarns, too, but I think any sport weight cotton should work.
Rachel
Any suggestions on how to make this skirt for "small" hipped people? I do not have a 38" hip size (which seems quite big to me), but would love to make this skirt.
What a lucky girl. You could make this for an approximately 28.5" (30", 31.5", 33")hip size by following the small (m, l, xl)instructions but only making 6 of each square, so that when you're assembling the final panels (see fig D) you have just 3 panels instead of 4. If that doesn't work for you, email me (roquemoma@yahoo.com) your hip measurements and I'll help you adjust the pattern.
Thanks,
Rachel
oh wonderful! I loved it but I too had the same issue of hip size. 28" is a little small but adjusting guage should hopefully fix that for me.. once I get enough time to make this
beautiful pattern.
I have a question about the instructions. I'm kind of new at crocheting and I want to attempt to make this skirt. What does it mean to "draw up a ½-inch loop"?
Hi Marisa, it should say "draw up a 1/2" (half inch) loop".
It would seem the crochetme.com gnomes that run the code of this site had their way with the fractions in the pattern. It should all be fixed now, and indicated with orange text. I apologize for any confusion the silly gnomes may have caused.
Cheers,
Kim, Ed.
Oh! That explains it! Thanks!
Thank you for asking that question. I was just fixing to ask the same one, and seen yours. And, thank you for the reply and the corrections. I have been scratching my head all day on the frac thing.
Teresa
I thought I would post here, since the question came up in an email someone sent, that this pattern is really easy to adjust for larger sizes as well as smaller sizes. If you follow the directions for size small but make ten of each square instead of eight, resulting in five rows across when you assemble it instead of four (see fig D), you would have a skirt with a hip measurement of 47.5". If you follow the directions for med, but add an extra row you get a hip measurement of 50", follow the large directions and add a row you get a hip measurement of 52.5", and follow the extra large directions and add a row and you get a hip measurement of 55".
This is really beautiful!
Fresh and vintage at the same time.
The best skirt patterns I have ever seen are both in crochet me.
Shelley
I have started making this skirt. I am on the final row of the first daisy square. Working the large size (although the instructions are the same on all sizes). it says to work 4 sc in each 4 chain space. The only 4 ch spaces are at the corners. Should I be doing 4 sc in the 3 ch spaces or 3 sc.
It would have been helpful to have a photo of a completed square to see. Please help quickly, I really want to keep working on this pattern.
You're right, the instructions should say to work 3 sc in each ch 3 space along each side of the square. The main thing is just to make sure you're not puckering your square, that it stays flat and even. I do have a picture of the finished square, if you email me at roquemoma@yahoo.com I can email you the picture. And definitely send me a picture or post if in the user forum here when you're done!
Rachel

Just Absolutely Gorgeous!!!
I have been looking for a really pretty crochet skirt pattern. This is beautiful. I am fairly new to crochet , but I think with some patience I could make this. It is really beautiful. Thank you for sharing it.
I just finished this skirt! I love it. I modified it a bit for my style, but the finished product looks very similar. Also, I used 3/4" black elastic woven through the dc round instead of the crocheted drawstring.

I made mine from Royale Quick Crochet Cotton in Cranberry. In the pic, I am wearing a short "nude" slip but I am planning on getting a knee length black slip to wear with it.
Stunningly gorgeous, I can't wait to make one, I thought your idea of incorporating the original pattern to a whole new item was CREATIVE I think you probably started on something, anyway good job. Thanx for sharing.
