would like a simple and quick easy pattern to start with, its freezing here in the uk, sooo cold it hurts your ears, no matter how many hats i try/buy they dont work, they ride up grr or my daughters rob them of me, having to walk my dog is starting to become a challenge as i know i will end up with earach and headache and on occassion pain in my jaw, i only have double knit wool to use at the moment, wool sellers are few and far between here these days. thank you in advance.
My favorite place to find patterns is: http://www.ravelry.com/
I love that it puts several pictures up to preview and the sorting choices to narrow down what you're looking for. 95% of the patterns are usually free and you usually get literally pages and pages of images to choose from. I'm sure you'll find a hat pattern that will suit you. One of my favorites is: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/versatile-earflap-hat-pattern. It gives instructions for all sizes (child to adult) and may be what you're looking for to keep you ears warm. It works up in just a couple of hours. Here's a picture of one I made for my grandson:

I've made quite a few hats as a crocheter, but I've always found that if I needed some extra warmth that adding a layer of fleece or fabric sewn into the inside works wonders. Have fun!

thank you both for your replies, think i have found a easy pattern, (famous last words)
never thought of the lining bit, in not normally a fan of hats as they tend to make my head itch, have to wear a donut hat in work and it drives me mad, but i guess the older i get the more i feel the cold, im normally only out for less than an hour these days, 30 mins to walk dog, 8 mins to walk to work, 20 mins to walk to supermarket, i only want something that will stay where i put it and not ride up lol, hopfully if i can get somemore wool i might get to try at the weekend lol x
