I'm working on a raglan dress and am confused with instructions from row 1-3 especially with the increase. Please help me explain:(

Chain 56 loosely.

Row 1: dc in third ch from the hoop and in next 7 chs, ch 2 (don't skip the ch), 12 dc in next 12 chs, ch 2, 15 dc in next 15 chs, ch 2, 12 dc in next 12 chs, ch 2, 7 dc in the last 7 chs. Place 4 markers at ch 2.

Row 2: ch 2 (counts as 1st dc),  6 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the ch 2 (raglan increase), 12 dc, raglan increase, 15 dc, raglan increase, 12 dc, raglan increase, 8 dc.
Rows 3-8: ch 3, dc in each dc across to raglan increase, raglan increase, repeat 4 times, dc to the end of the row.

Can someone please help me understand how many dc I will have in each section in row 3?

In Row 1 you have beginning chain + 7dc (for a total of 8 sts), ch-2, 12 dc, ch-2, 15 dc, ch-2, 12 dc, ch-2, 7dc. This gives you a total of 54 sts and 4 ch-2 spaces for the row.

NOTE: The ch-2 spaces of each row are where you work the raglan increase stitches (2 dc, ch-2, 2 dc). There are 4 of these worked in each row. Since there are 4 dc in each increase, and there are 4 increases in each row, each row will be 16 sts larger than the previous row.

Row 2: 9 sts (Beg ch + 6 dc + 2dc from the increase group), ch-2,  16 dc (2 dc + 12 dc + 2 dc), ch-2, 19 dc (2 dc + 15 dc + 2dc), ch-2, 16 dc (2 dc + 12 dc + 2 dc), ch-2, 10 dc (2 dc + 8 dc). This gives you a total of 70 sts and 4 ch-2 spaces.

Row 3:  12 sts (beg ch + 9dc + 2dc), ch-2, 20 dc (2 dc + 16 dc + 2 dc), ch-2, 23 dc (2 dc + 19 dc + 2 dc), ch-2, 20 dc (2 dc + 16 dc + 2 dc), ch-2, 11 dc (2 dc + 9 dc). This gives you a total of 86 sts and 4 ch-2 spaces.

Since the Pattern says rows 3 thru 8 are worked with the increases, here are the stitch counts for each of those rows. Each end section of each row increases by 2 dc per row, and each of the middle sections increase by 4 dc per row.

Row 4 will have a total of 102 stitches

Row 5 will have a total of 118 stitches

Row 6 will have a total of 134 stitches

Row 7 will have a total of 150 stitches

Row 8 will have a total of 166 stitches

Hope this helps, if you have any questions, email me at cat-ghans@sbcglobal.net and I will try to answer them.

Wow! Awesome!!:) thank you so much for a detailed explanation of this raglan dress. I was almost going to give up doing it, thanks to your clear instructions, I have already made the bodice and am working on the skirt. This pattern is for a doll dress, I am definitely going to make my 4 year old the same dress for a toddler. I am really glad and thankful you were able to help me. If I get stuck again, I will absolutely reach out. Thank you!!!
