So, I have this habit of working on multiple projects at once, which often leads to having to put up a project or pack it to work on in transit. This had led to many occasions where I had lost count of rows or of stitches in rows, especially when making kippot for my husband or hats for friends. I had tried tying yarn around a stitch, which always took more time than it was worth. I kept wanting to buy those stitch markers, but always forgot and KNEW there had to be another way.
Then came the day where I looked over and saw a hair pin of mine that I left laying around. I picked it up and slid it around the post of the first stitch of my round. It started sliding, so I bent in the open ends so they overlapped, and, voila! I had made my own round marker that I can buy in bulk for cheap, and it's a multitasker, as I can always unbend and use in my hair, or vice versa.
Hope this helps some of you!
