I was about halfway through the top circle of the largest plate covers when I noticed something. I could see the joining stitches! Maybe it was my poorly constructed stitches, but I thought I would try something different.
This pattern called for joining rounds with a sl st, ch1, sc around. It was much easier and neater to use Amigurumi style to get a more uniform look to the cake tops and sides.
Anyone working on a circular pattern should do a sample swatch circle to see which looks better, because crochet is art and it's a personal preference thing. I am much happier with the details in this project, as no dicernable front or back side presents itself and lends more creative license for the freeform vines.
