http://www.knittinganyway.com/freethings/russianjoin.htm This is my favorite method for joining yarn for solid projects. I will usually try to use the join along the edge so that it can be covered by edge sts or in a seam. Even if it is done in the middle of an afghan it isn't that noticable. It will show up in lace work though so use it wisely there.
