For large projects that I won't travel with I "strip" the yarn into a popcorn tin, basket, or whatever I have. I just pull the yarn from the skein and let it gently flow into the container. I've put plastic bags in my baskets and then just tied the handles into an overhand knot when I have to move a project or am not ready to wind the leftovers into a ball. I've not had any yarn tangle, but I have lost the end when I didn't tie it to the bag handle first.

Doing this enables me to find annoying knots in the skein, Russian join all the yarn needed for afghans and other large projects, and lets the yarn flow smoothly as I work it.

I've had people tell me they use a fishing line stripper to quickly do this, but I can't seem to find one w/o ordering it. I just get a kid or dh to hold the skein up while I "milk" the yarn into the container. :o)
