I found a vintage pattern for an amazing beret that uses this stitch, but I can't find any info on how to make it. Apparently there is something called a "Crazy Daisy Winder". Is this something that was manufactured or do I/can I make it?

It was manufactured, though you might be able to make one. Or buy one on eBay. try Google.
