how do you sell?

for those of you that sell your crocheted (or other yarn-crafted) projects, how do you do it?

i've looked at ebay listings, and for finished things like afghans or hand-made baby clothes, the selling price even WITH auction ends up somewhere around $3 - $5. that doesn't even begin to cover the cost of the yarn, much less the time and effort put into it.

i will not deal with amazon.com. they screwed me over when purchasing christmas presents for my husband, and i found out that they "accidentally but irreversably" deducted money from a friend's account when they should have credited her that money. she has no way of reclaiming it.

i tried listing some things on etsy.com, but had no nibbles whatsoever. i don't know if it was my pricing or what, even though i tried to price things in line with other items of the same genre.

i get a lot of compliments on my work, and while it's nice to give things away to friends and family, it would also be nice to make a little pocket money with this stuff that's swiftly claiming space in my closets and shelves.

any suggestions?

In the summer, I sell things at farmers' markets. Year round, I have a set up at a local arts center.

Hi! Set up a store at Blujay. It's completely FREE, so if you don't sell anything, you don't lose money. I just set up shop there 2 weeks ago, and I've had 10 sales. You can sell anything there, and you can accept money orders as payment if you don't want to mess with PayPal's fees! Hope to see you over there! My shop is treblecrochet...Also, things stay listed there as long as you'd like them to! Come on over and check it out!

Try selling on Craftmall.com. It's very professional. I've done alot of research and I am setting up my store with them now. Should have my things listed in a few days(toys, baby things, lots of purses)I'm under Donnaco Designs. Try looking in a week for me. I have a very good feeling about this site. Etsy didn't seem to attractive. Too many rules. Good luck!

Have you looked into Etsy? I sell my handmade sewn accessories there. It's free to join and the selling fees are far lower than eBay or the like. In addition, it's a place where they strictly sell handmade items. No mass productions. The only thing that one can sell on it that's not handmade are Vintage items.

Good luck!

UPDATED: Just realized that you tried Etsy. The secret is advertising. You really gotta push it. Go on the forums because you'll meet other buyers, (and sellers who do not sell your type items). Open a blog and list your items there. They have this code called Etsy Mini and you can put it anywhere that accepts javascript like your blog. It will update as you update your shop (so your items listed will be auto-updated).

See mine in my blog (top right sidebar):

I sell my handmade items at craft shows and holiday festivals under the name gypsy wagon, even the small town shows can be very lucrative not to mention just fun meeting and networking with other crafters.
