I found an afghan I like but I am confused about the directions. It says to crochet in the black loops only and I have no idea what that means!! I am new at crocheting so please try to explain it in simple terms...haha!! I am grateful for any help I can get!!

Here's a page with a picture of 'back loop' and 'front loop', http://mamanpoule06.free.fr/traduction/traduction.html

It really should be 'back OF THE loop' or 'back strand', not 'back loop'. That's a confusing convention.

thanks for the website. so it all has to do with where you put your hook in the chain?? I always thought you put the hook through both pieces of yarn in the chain...but the picture looks different from that.

Never say never or always, LOL. You get different textures and, sometimes, openness by working in the front strand, back strand, or both.

You're right, in general you usually do put your hook under both loops unless otherwise instructed.

Here's another link for you http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=128

that's interesting... i was always taught to only go through the front loop on each row, not both. i'll do both if i've got a particularly loose stitch going, or if i've got multiple stitches in one stitch... like on a 5 dc shell, i'll do 4 dc in the front loop, then the 5th in both to prevent the whole stitch from pulling.

i always felt like i was cheating if i went through both :).
