I'm about halfway through my first mitten in this pattern and I've run into a problem! I finished all the cuff rows and shaping of the thumb and hands. Then it has you fasten off. These are the next instructions
Thumb: Ch 3, hdc to m, remove m, hdc in marked st, hdc in next 3 sts, ch 5 turn.
Did all that. Next:
Next row: hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, hdc in each st of thumb, hdc in each ch, turn- 13 st. work 7 rows even.
problem--- when it says "hdc in each st of thumb" is that the part marked "thumb" if so, how do you get to hdc in each ch as taht is the end of a row? I'm very confused and have exhausted all my thoughts on what it could mean. Please help!!!
I am so happy to find someone else working on this pattern! I read it as: hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 13 st. I ignored the "hdc in each ch" and it seemed to work out alright - however, I'm very curious to know how you worked the cuff. I have had a horrible time getting the stitch count to work right - I started out with the base chain seeming to have one stitch too many, and row 2 gave me a lot of trouble. The counts in general on this project have been a problem! I'd love to hear what you did. So far I haven't been impressed with this pattern, even though I really want to make the mittens!
Thank you so much for replying! I sort of took a break from the mittens as I ran into the snag, so I'll try again with your tip and see if I can complete one! I may have to send you a message again...
As for how I worked the cuff- I know I ran into another pattern problem while I was working it, but I ended up figuring it out and got the right amount of stitches. However, i didn't mark what I did (probably not the best idea figuring I have to make TWO mittens!), but once I work the next one, I'll let you know!
I just started this pattern today, and I had a dickens of a time figuring out the cuff until I realized that when it says to sc in each stitch she means the stitches AND the chains. The directions really aren't written very clearly for anything, but I love the way the mittens look, and I'm up for a good challenge any day. Tomorrow I start the body and thumb areas so it's nice to have inside tips from you all who are already into it. Thanks!
I finished the mittens... Overall I'm not happy with them. I probably should have worked them with a smaller hook (my gauge is always too big) as the cuff turned out reaalllyy long. the hand came together at a point which I corrected by just seaming them together where i thought it looked best. however, i did figure out the thumb and they ARE mittens. i just think i'd like a different pattern more-- or maybe if i did the child size!!
I'm just about finished this pair and they turned out well. I agree with you all about how poorly done the written directions are. I refuse to mince words - the instructions really, really suck. I had to re-write parts on mitten number one so I'd get it right for mitten number two. It would have helped if after certain spots the designer had mentioned how many stitches you were supposed to have. I had to wing it in many places.
Here's what I did when stitching the thumb. On my size, I was to have 41 stitches going across before I started the thumb. After much ripping out, I decided to do my own version. I made sure I had 14 stitches unworked on one side, crocheted 13 in the middle to start the thumb base, and left 14 unworked on the other side. 14+13+14 = 41 stitches. Then I crocheted up on the 13 stitches for the thumb (I did 8 rows to make it a little longer.) Ignore the written directions for the thumb. As long as it's dead in the centre of your starting row as close as you can, you are good to go and it's worked well for me.
When crocheting around the thumb area to build up the hand after you sew the thumb, don't sweat those stupid instructions. Get as close to the stitch count as you can, fudge it a little here and there by doing a 2hdc if you have to, and keep going nice and straight and neat.
This pattern should have been edited far better. It's not you - it's the pattern. I can only imagine the horror if I were a beginner.
oh thank you thank you thank you! I'm printing off all of this thread so I can start work again on those mittens. I had to put that project AWAY and start something else it was killing me! But I'm so in love with the lacy cuff and I absolutely refuse to admit defeat on any pattern, so (deep breath) here I go again...
i think you are totally right. the pointed mitten with extra long cuff was what the pattern written created! you should send an email to the magazine with your corrections. perhaps they'll hire you on as an editor!
tell me how it turns out... i ended up throwing my finished one away because i hated it. perhaps i'll do it again if the pattern is corrected!
I looked for corrections to this pattern on the web ( http://www.interweavecrochet.com/corrections08.asp ) but the only correction for this issue is for a different pair of mitts. Ideally, if you email the editor, Kim Werker, she'll publish the correction on the web site. It would be a kindness to other crocheters if you did.
