Hi! I am making a 3 color afghan, but need help finding a good stitch. I want a non-crocheter to be able to easily tell that there are 4 rows of this color before 2 rows of that color before 1 row of that color, etc. (it's a long story, don't ask!) For so many patterns it seems like this would be a difficult task! I've done a sample up doing every other row with front post DCs and the in-between rows with back post DCs, which gives these really nice raised areas between each row, which is great for telling that you've got 4 rows of color A, but then when you add color B, you can see that color peeking through under the raised bump of color A. Does that make any sense?
Anyway, If you have any ideas of a simple stitch/row pattern that makes it easy to tell that you've got 4 rows of one color before switching to the next, I'd appreicate hearing about it greatly!
thanks!
If every row is single crochet, it would be easy to count the rows! Too easy?
How about using a different stitch each row like a row of sc, then a row of dc, then a row of hdc, etc.? For a bit of texture, work in back loops only or front loops only.
Mix up stitch heights in some or all rows to produce waves.
Get texture from doing sc, dc, sc, dc... across the row. On the way back, sc on top of the dcs, dc on top of the scs.
www.Mypicot.com has some lovely multi-color patterns, but you'd have to follow her color sequences to get her effects, and you seem to have a specific arrangement in mind.

Thank you Pauline! I think I just found another new favorite website! :)
I forgot about just working in the back loops only and I really like the idea of alternating the stiches..thanks so much for your ideas!
