Do you have any links to how-to instructions or videos? I've just basically learned to crochet, I think I've mastered the chain and single crochet. I want to make some fingerless mitts (my office is stinking cold this winter!) and most are in the round. I'd like to see some video or pics of how to get it going. Thanks!

To get a pair of fingerless mitts the easy way, see the Pattern section here for a great mitt pattern that uses yarn with a halo, like mohair yarn. I made a pair. They are lovely. And you simply work back and forth, from hand to arm and back again.

For most patterns that call for working in the round, you simply follow the pattern instructions. You make a chain and when it's long enough you slip stitch into the beginning of the chain to make a ring while being very careful not to twist the chain. Then you do what you usually do at the end of a row, make a turning chain, but don't turn. Continue by working stitches into the foundation chain. After you work a round, join with a slip stitch and make another no turn turning chain. Google for 'video of working crochet in the round' to find a video. There may be some.

Even better to start working in the round (or flat) is to make a foundation single crochet row. It will be much easier to join without accidentally twisting since there is more heft to it. It is also more elastic and, I think, easier to do than stitching into a foundation chain. Google 'foundation single crochet' for a description of it.

Good luck.

The pattern I found here seems fairly simple, but works in a spiral, I think. The first few rows it says TURN at the end -- but you wouldn't turn a spiral would you? I couldn't figure out what to do with that. I did figure out how to join with the first chain, then I just kept going 'round, although I think I may have twisted the chain -- it's kind of hard not to do that, lol. It was fun to play with, but wasn't sure if I was doing it right - I think I just used the front loop instead of the entire loop if that makes sense (I don't know all the abbrev. or terms yet). I did get a cuff-shaped piece.

On the pattern you're referring to -- how do you get the round shape if you just go back & forth? I'll have to look for that one and see if it explains it.

Thanks for answering and I will definitely look up the foundation single crochet and see how that helps. THANKS!

OK, I think I have foundation single crochet down now. So, when I to to join the ends, where do I put the hook? In the top or the bottom part of the stitch? (did that even make sense?)

Top part. I neglected to mention it will leave a tiny slit, but you can close the slit when you weave in the starting tail.

This is the pattern I was talking about, http://crochetme.com/patterns/mohair-handwarmers No spirals. I didn't realize there were so many fingerless gloves in Patterns! I'm sorry I wasn't specific.

I'm not sure which pattern you are using, but if it has a large slit at the wrist, or for the thumb, you would turn for a few rows.

OK, I realized originally I wasn't using a CrochetMe pattern (I got confused with all the Googling I was doing, lol!). But I got to looking and found these: http://crochetme.com/patterns/basic-fingerless-mittens. Now, they are done spiral, but I'm getting the hang of it. I'm not sure if it's just the visual of the green, or the flower, but the mohair ones just didn't call out "make me!" like these did, lol. So, those are what I'm trying to work on now. I'm just using scrap yarn, so I'll never actually wear them, but I want to get my stitches consistent and figure out all my little quirks, then I'll actually BUY yarn (what a concept, lol!) and make a 'real' pair.
