So here is a link to the pattern I am working on

http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/70229AD.html

I have finished the first two squares and am to the part where I am supposed to join them, here....

SQUARES 2-4

Make as for Square 1, but do not fasten off. As each square is completed, join as follows:

From right side, hold last row of first square and side opposite fringed edge of next square together. Working through both thicknesses, work 42 sc evenly across.

Fasten off.

So, is the fringe on the blanket going in different ways, rather than all the way down opposite sides. Does that make sense?

Also, after I join the first two squares, do I fasten off and start square 3? And if so, how do I join that one. I just don't get it!!

Thank you so much for any help or advice.....

It's a cute blanket, but those instructions! Tsk, tsk.

That photo is the only clue about the fringe, and it's not at all clear what is going on. The instructions say nothing about fringe. Maybe, just maybe, originally the fringe was made as the stripes were worked - just leave a long piece at the start and at the end and trim them even - and then someone altered the pattern to say "Carry color not in use loosely along edge of work," but neglected to add instructions on how to make the fringe.

Joining squares: decide whether the 'carried loosely' edge or the other edge would look better as an outside edge. Join square 2 to the other edge. Join square 3 to square 2 using the same logic. Square 4 gets joined on two sides.

Do the fringe any way you think it looks good. No instructions = no "right" way = be imaginative. Use a third color, even. Or skip the fringe. No crochet police will descend upon you if you alter things.
