Does anyone have a fail-safe method for making fat, beautiful pompoms without resorting to some little kit thingy, y'know just old-school. Mine are okay but I don't really know what I'm doing, and I'd prefer them plumper and less patchy, if you know what I mean! Thanks!
Fool proof? Not really, but you can make a kit thingy for free from a butter tub lid or a yogurt lid.
Cut out a 'C' shape, a donut with a gap, and wind your yarn around it. The size of the pompom depends on how thick the donut is, not just on the donut's diameter. A 'C' shape lets you wind off from a ball of yarn. If you use an 'O' shape you'll have to cut and poke the yarn thru the middle of the O on every wrap, a super nuisance.
Don't pull the yarn so tightly that you buckle the plastic.
After winding, I guesstimate how many winds make adequate plumpness, thread a yarn needle with a piece of the same yarn and run the needle around the middle of the windings. Tie it off, cut around the outer edge of the loops, and there's your pompom. Or maybe it was a learning experience and you'll try again with a thicker 'C' shape or fewer windings or...
