A challenge: What can I make with this yarn?

I'm picking up crocheting again after a few year's long hiatus. I'm still a beginner. I tried to get into it before but the projects I chose for myself were just too difficult and I gave it up.

The thing is, I still have yarn taking up space and I'm strapped for cash. I'd like to find a project that will let me use up the yarn I have before I go out and buy more.

The most frustrating is the 12 balls of Paton's Astra. I have been able to figure out that it's a DK or light weight yarn and it's acrylic. It's all the same colour. All I can find on the Paton's site is a baby blanket. Could anyone direct me to a free pattern or one I can buy online that would use up this yarn and fit the following description?

1) Uses About 12 balls of a yarn like Paton's Astra

2) Is easy enough for a beginner (can do lots of different stitches, not so good at shaping)

3) Is not for children. Home decor, hats, accessories, etc, etc is good.

Thanks so much in advance.

As I recall, Astra is sport weight-ish, so that might help your search.

Caron yarns has some lovely patterns, and their new yarn, Spa, is lighter than worsted tho maybe a little heavier than Astra. There are some shawl patterns that you might like, http://www.naturallycaron.com/projects/item_index/crochet.html

And of course there are so many patterns on Crochet Pattern Central, http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php
