I am trying to use double crochet to make a scarf. As it gets longer, it keeps getting narrower at the top. I think I'm not going far enough to the end of the row. How can I tell how far to crochet before going to the next row?

You could always count your stitches. You should have the same number in each row.. and don't forget to work into the turning chain of the previous row. Also check to make sure you are not pulling it too tight as you work.
