I taught myself how to crochet and I want to make sure I am crocheting in a round correctly.

When you are single crocheting in a round does your first stitch of the next row go in the same stitch you joined to.

Pattern says: join with a sl st to first sc

round 2

ch 1 sc first stitch

Is the first stitch the same stich you joined to?

Thanks for your help!

Yes.

Usually the ch 1 does NOT count as the first sc. The pattern will say if it does.

I have the same sorts of questions Amberleigh. Crochet instructions like this seem very confusing to me.

I don't think she has an issue with the chain 1 stitch. If you picture it by step you are to slip stitch into the first sc from the previous round. In the second instruction you are to sc into the first stitch. Whether or not you chain 1, the question is, do you sc into the same stitch you just slip stitched into. Is that what you meant Amberleigh? Because that always confuses me, too.

mad for crochet!

I have to agree with Pauline. The chain1 is just like a turning chain when you are doing rows, you don't count it as a stitch. And Yes, you sc into that same stitch you slip stitched into.It is the 1st stitch. I hope I didn't just add to the confusion! :0)

Sarah, that clarified it for me. I think the reference to the chain confuses things, because that is not the stitch in question.

Thanks!
