I am in the process of finishing up a sweater for my granddaughter. The finishing instructions are for a ribbing stitch. I understand that I'm supposed to put the hook through the back loop.
These are the instructions
Ribbing: With right side facing and smaller hook, attach CB at lower edge, chain 3 work 41 dc across beg ch turn (does this mean the lower edge of the sweater back/sides? btw I'm using a sc stitch because I didn't like the way the dc looked)
ribbing row, ch2 dc around post of next dc from the front, dc around the post of the next dc from the back (how is this going to result in a verticle row?
I've looked at pictures of what a ribbing stitch should look like. It should look kind of like knit 1, purl 1. I just can't visualize how the instructions above are going to yield a pattern that looks like the ribbing runs vertically.
Maybe I just need to play around with the stitch some.
I'm a visual person and these written instructions just don't make sense to me.
The double chains are needed for this ribbing because the around the post technique pushes the stitch forward, making it raised. A couple of rows like this and you will see the vertical lines.
mad for crochet!
Thanks for the response. I'm just about finished and ready to sew the sections together. I'll try to follow the pattern and see what I come up with.
I don't think I'll use this pattern again though. The directions for the sleeve are to increase one stitch at the end of each right side row. I followed the directions until the sleeve measured about a couple dozen rows and then stopped and ripped it all out. It looked terrible! So I started over. I used the increase directions from another pattern that said to crochet 4 rows and then increase 2 stitches every 4th row. It's a much more gradual, uniform widening.
I figured out the stitch! Part of the problem was I didn't know what the "trunk" of the double crochet was.
I finally figured it out by looking at pictures of stitches that had the direction of the hook. My first attempt came out pretty good.
The directions said to do the ribbing on each section seperately and then join back to front. I decided it would be better to join sides to back and then do the ribbing as one section so I took the ribbing off the back and sewed the sections together. So far I have 2 rows of ribbing done and am very happy with the results.
