Crochet with boucle?

I'm experimenting with different yarns and materials, and I'm finding it pretty much impossible to crochet with boucle. Is there a trick to it? I can't tell where the stitches are much less where the back loop or front loop is.

TIA for any help/advice.

I've found that with novelty yarns like boucle I get the best results by using an extremely large hook. It makes it so much easier to see/feel exactly where each stitch is.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I know I've seen patterns in books using boucle and a regular size hook. I'm just puzzled by how they can find their stitches without having big giant holes to work with.
