I am pretty new to crochet - I have completed one solid color scarf and am about to start a second, striped scarf. I know that I could just tie the new color in using a knot to begin the stripe, but is there a better/less obvious way? Or any suggestions in general for switching from one color to another?

Thanks!!!!

Hi Ashley,

The way I change colors is this: When you get to the last stitch before you want to change colors, leave the last two loops of your stitch on the hook. Drop the old color and pull the new color through the two loops with your hook. You have just finished your last stitch with the new color and now you are ready to move along with that color. You sometimes have to pull on the ends of the yarn to keep that stitch from getting too big. To save yourself the weaving in of the ends when you finish, crochet right over them in that next row as you go. You can use this color changing technique anywhere in your piece, it doesn't have to be at the end of a row. Hope this helps. Have fun, Sarah

Thanks a lot Sarah!

Is there anything I have to do the very first time I add the color, like make a slip-knot or anything? I am just getting time now to try it out and when I add the new color it isn't making a loop so I don't know how to proceed.

This is probably so simple but I can't seem to figure it out!

I don't think it is necessary to use a slip knot, but some people do. When you finish that last stitch with the new color, you pull that new color with your hook through the last two loops of the last stitch of the old color, and end up with one loop of the new color on your hook. It is the same as just finishing the stitch normally, except for that last step, you are using the new color. I know this is very wordy, but I am trying to be as clear as I can. You will get this! :0)

New to crochet, I started a granny square project, but only finished about 8 squares when I noticed one of the squares fell apart. I had learned that you should never knot yarn to add color, but my squares are small (4 colors, including the outside black row) and I really don't want to spend so much time to weave in all of the ends. (I took it to a yarn shop and was told to leave a tale of about 18inches, way too much weaving for me!).

Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
