A friend gave me an old potholder that she loves and would like another one like it. I said "no problem" till I got it home and started looking at it.
The front and back are exactly the same. It looks like either single crochet or chain stitch. It is not 2 pieces sewn together, but it has the weight and feel of 2 pieces sewn together. When I put a needle thru the "V" of the stitch on top, it comes out between 2 rows on the reverse side. It is almost like it is single crochet on side 1 and single crochet thru some unusual part of the stitch on side 2 to make it seem like it is double. (It uses a single strand of yarn.) I have tried many things with scrap yarn and just can't get it.
I do not want to take it apart to figure out the pattern since she loves the potholder so much and it has a nice finishing border crocheted around the outside.
I have searched the internet for potholder patterns and have found many neat ones, but none like this. I have looked thru pattern books that are 50+ years old and cannot find it.
I have been crocheting for many years, but this has me stumped and I hope someone on this forum can help. I know I probably have not explained the look and feel of the potholder well enough but if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate help.

5. continue on... sort of like rounds but no increases. When you get it as big as you want, work a row of sc through both sides.
Clear as mud??

located on the following website - i've made it and it is double thick -- as the lady says it is an old pattern handed down
Thank you. I found the pattern you referred me to several weeks ago when I first started to search the internet for the pattern I am looking for. I actually made this potholder for my friend, but have not had a chance to give it to her yet. I really like the way it works up and envision making some with scrap yarn for Christmas presents.
