I am new to crochet. My question is: I found a great easy pattern for a hat that I wanted to make. I says to use a wool blend yarn. Would it be okay to substitute an acrylic yarn or do I have to use the yarn call for in the pattern?

Most of the time you can change types of yarn, the wool is softer and warmer may be the reason they chose it. But I make caps all the time and I always use Red Heart acrylic without any problems. The one thing is that if the pattern calls for a cotton yarn you really should use it, like for a potholder or something. The acrylic yarn cannot get hot but the cotton can, also dishcloths need to be made out of cotton. Okay, I'll hush now 8>)
