You already have the skills to make just about anything. If you take apart a sweater it's basically a bunch of rectangles sewn together. You can make an easy hat by crocheting a rectangle, sewing the short ends together, and gathering one long end. A skirt is a long rectangle with the ends sewing together--easy enough to cinch the waist with a ribbon or sewing in some light elastic. You can make bags/purses, pot-holders, coasters, table cloths/runners, dishcloths/washcloths, etc etc. If you want to go even farther, though, I would recommend learning visual crochet that uses the international crochet symbols. Instead of reading patterns line by line you can see exactly how a pattern or motif develops at a glance. I have seen a couple of titles that specifically address it--Teach Yourself Visually Crocheting and BluePrint Crochet.

I love to crochet. I just started two years ago and now I am making cable stitch patterns. There are several tutorials on youtube you can watch to learn new stitches. What stitches do you know? Granny squares are fun to make. Hats and coasters can be made in circles with double crochet stitch. Can you read a pattern? That would be a great thing to teach yourself.
