TRC into loop??

I'm trying to start a shawl pattern and am stuck at the beginning!

I've made a loop of 5 stitches, and Row 1 states:

Ch 3, 5 trc into loop, ch 3, 5 trc into loop, turn.

I'm confused about the 5 trc into loop. Do I trc into the 5th chain on the loop I've just made, then continue to make 4 more in the next chains around the loop, chain 3 and repeat?

Or does this mean one trc into the 5th chain on the loop, chain 3, one more trc?

I've tried both ways and it seems like there should be only 2 trc made in this first row...

Thank you!!

If I understand correctly, you chained 5 and then slipped stitched into the beginning chain to form a loop.

If that is what you did, for Row 1 you chain 3, then do 5 treble crochet[trc]into the loop(each trc will wrap around the chain stitches that form the loop, the trc do not go through the chain stitches that make up the loop) then chain 3, and do 5 more trc into the loop.

See photos on this page: http://crochet.about.com/od/learntocrochet/ss/Crochet_Granny_Square_3.htm

This particular page deals with starting a Granny square, but the stitches for the first row of a granny are worked "into the loop" just like your directions tell you to do. The granny has 4 sets of stitches to make the square, but your directions just have 2 sets of stitches.

Hope I haven't confused you more.

Thank you! As you can tell I'm a beginner and have never crocheted in the round before. I've always crocheted into the stitch and didn't know you could crochet around a whole stitch. But it makes sense and looks good!! Thanks so much again.

You're very welcome. Post a picture when you finish.
