I just purchased an afghan pattern from Annies Attic called 6 pointed star afghan. It calls for size I crochet hook, but to get the correct gauge, I am using G. The problem is, the piece will not lay flat, I have tried crocheting a little looser, using an H, I, & J hook. Can someone please give me some advice? Thank you
I have made several of these pointed afghans. Are you using the same weight of yarn that the pattern calls for? That will make a big difference. But you must realize that it will lay flat as it gets bigger, also the way you have to hold it all crumpled up in your hand makes it not lay flat. I know this sounds terrible but I would keep on crocheting because it will take several rows before you can smooth out the ripples.
I'm not sure about the weight of the yarn, I'll have to check that when I get home from work. I have re-started this thing 3 times and I am starting to get frustrated. I am on row 17 now, and when I lay it on a flat surface and smooth it out, it will lay flat, but its not flat when I crochet on it. RRRRRRR
I think you are doing it right because mine is all bunched up until I smooth it out with my hands. So it sounds okay to me. Once it gets more weight to it that will pull it out flat. Hang in there 8>)
Thanks for the confidence. I checked the weight of the yarn and it is perfect for the pattern. I'll keep goin and let you know. Thanks again
I am now on row 40 and it still has not flattened!! I am just going to continue until its done, I may have to block it. (Pain)
You said before that it lays flat when you smooth it out with your hands, will it still do that? When I finish a project I always wash and dry it, but I don't let it dry completely. I take it out when it is just a little damp and then spread it out on my bed, straightening the sides or anywhere it needs it. Therefore it will dry in the perfect shape. But that's just me, I'm sure there are lots of other people with better ideas. 8>) But keep us updated so we can all be happy with your progress together.
I don't have any better advice than what you've been given. Sometimes things just straighten out over time once they are laid flat. If not, the one good thing about an afghan is that you can fold it so that the best side shows and display it that way. If it's a gift, however, then as painful as it is (and I avoid it whenever I can) you are going to have to block it.
If you ever decide you want to make another one, let me know. I have made lots and I have a super simple pattern that turns out great everytime. The only time I had a problem was when I was a tester for a designer that made the center a heart shape. There were some problems going from the heart to the points....but we finally got it all corrected. But you know I wish you the best of luck, so let us know. :)
Thank you all!!! I will probably wash it and almost dry it when I'm done--it does lay flat when I smooth it out. I am really enjoying making this afghan, maybe I'll take you up on the other pattern you have.
Here is the link to a well written easy round ripple afghan. Don't get scared when you see the photo, it is of a queen size blanket she made. But I think it is written very simply and it just tells you to continue until it is as big as you want it to be. I like this pattern.

Thank you for the pattern. I also like the babay blanket pattern. You've been a great help!
I'm working on the Cappuccino Cardigan from the Fall 2009 Interweave Crochet magazine. I don't think I am "getting" how to shape the armhole, it just doesn't look right and I can't seem to get the number of stitches per row correct. I wondered if anyone could help me out. I want to get back to work on this, I just love the cardigan pattern. (if anyone has the mag, the pattern is on age 48, and I'm stuck at rows 4-9 in "Shape Armhole" section.
