Just curious, what is everyone's preference with attaching granny squares together? Do you sew them together with a large needle, crochet/knit them together?

Any spcific styles or teqniques?

I'm making a large blanket for a gift, and I want it to look nice. Its all granny squares. I'm connecting as I go, but I started sewing them together and I'm just not happy with how it looks. Since the squares are different colors, it's impossible to pick a color yarn that is invisible. The seams just look kind of sloppy, even though I did them very even and straight.

Any suggestions or ideas?

I usually whipstitch the seams if they are more solid squares. Otherwise, if it's a more open pattern, I do a kind of lacy chain to connect them. Since the squares in your blanket are all different colors you could use a neutral color to do the seaming and act as a background color. Or you can connect squares as you crochet the last round by slip-stitching into the adjoining square in the stitches that butt up against eachother.

Try working the seams in the back loop only. This will give a nice ridge effect to the front of your afghan.

If you are concerned about the different colors showing through and you don't like that look, work 1 row of sc in something like black, or white, or something that would match the blanket around each square to give it a finished look. Then when you put them together the stitching will blend in with the sc row and not show as much.

I attach squares as I go.  Attic 24 has a great tutorial for joining squares as you go.  Good luck
