Understanding a stitch

I am crocheting socks. It is a new pattern and it says Ch 32 Row 1 Ldc in forth chain from hook. I have been in all of my crochet books and magazines and they have no explaination. What is a Ldc.

I've heard of a Tdc--turning double crochet. Wonder if that's similar?

Ldc means long double crochet. The only videos I could find on line use a "dropped" version of the Ldc which means that the dc is worked in a stitch one or two rows below your current row. However, since you are working yours in your foundation chain I had to dig out a pattern from the 1960's to get directions for it.

The pattern I have called for long half-double crochet but the long double would use the same technique.

For the long double in your case:

Ch 32, Yarn over hook, insert hook into 4th chain from hook, draw up a loop about 3/4" long (hook will be in horizontal position), yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over draw through 2 loops (Ldc completed).

The directions I have say that the long half-double is about the same height as a regular double crochet. So I would guess that a long double crochet would be the same height as a treble crochet.

IM DOING PATTERN FOR MY CROCHETED BRIMMED HAT.

NORMALLY WHEN A PATTERN  CALLS FOR A DIFFERENT OR UNIQUE STITCH THEY TELL YOU HOW TO DO IT IN THE BEGINNING. IM DOWN TO THE HAT BAND, CONSTANTLY COUNTING STITCHES,,,,,80 ON ROUND 13, THEN INCREASE BUT NEVER GIVES ST COUNT ANYMORE. ITS BIG ENOUGH FOR TWO HEADS AT THIS POINT. I FOLLOW DIRECTIONS EXACTLY BUT IT SEEMS WHEN I MAKE HATS THEY ALL COME OUT HUGE EVEN THO I DO AS DIRECTED IN THE PATTERN. ANYWAY, HERE I AM AT ROUND 29 AND AT THIS POINT IT LOOKS LIKE A HUGE FRISBEE. THE PATTERN CONSTANTLY INCREASES, AND MINE SURE HAS. BUT DISCONTINUED AT 80 STILL INCREASING IN RD. 16 BUT NOT MENTIONED ANYMORE. ROUND 16 ADDS 16 MORE STS BUT DOES NOT SAY 96. IT SAYS NOTHING. I LOVE HATS AND IM SURE TRYING BUT SOMEHOW SOMEWAY MY HAT PATTERNS END UP BEING TWICE AS BIG AS THEY SHOULD. HELP PLEASE, BUT THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW WHAT 1 LONG CH MEANS ALONG WITH LONGDC (END OF ROUND) (40 LONG DC) IM SO CONFUSED.
