Am I making a spiral for a mitt pattern?

Hi there, I am a 'flat' crocheter, a lot of experience with afghans and a few baby sweaters, now I need to branch out.

Saw the cool Orchard Mitts pattern in Interweave Crochet Fall 2009, and am confused about part of the pattern. It says:Chain 29, Rnd 1, without twisting ch, sc in first ch to form ring; place marker (pm) in sc just made. Sc in each chain just made, do NOT join-29 sc. You then continue on, for rounds 2-9, using a special spike stitch which seems pretty straightforward.

I'm confused on the 'do NOT join' part. Does that mean I am making a spiral? And is the marker just to tell me where I began the spiral?

Any help anyone can provide would be appreciated! I did see some cool mitt patterns here and really want to get started on some (cold hands whilst reading at night!)

Hi, regarding your question, Yes, I would interpret the instruction as such, that you are making a spiral and, yes, the marker is just as you said,to mark the beginning of the spiral. When the instruction says "without twisting", I interpret it to also mean, do not turn as in a flat crochet.

In a flat crochet, one indeed has to twist the yarn when turning to start a new row. I hope this helps.

Mittens is something I have yet to try also. Please let us know how you are progressing with your first mitt. After my commitments to making hats, I'd like to try mitten next.

Happy crocheting,

Thanks, chain4ever! I think we are right, and once I get the yarn to start these (planning on a visit to the LYS in Mineral Point next week) I'll report back here to let you know how they go.

Have you seen the pattern and picks from Interweave Crochet Fall 2009? I think you can find them through the site here.
