Hi everybody, I'm a 28 year-old craft-obsessed artist and I've visited this website for at least a year now - I was waiting impatiently for it to be updated again... It's good to see crochet can indeed fly! I am quite fond of freeform or improvised crochet, although I've been known to use patterns once in a while. To me, crochet is sculpture and a sensual delight.
Question for you guys... do people tease you or make fun of you because of this amazing craft? I work in the video games industry so in this very modern office of mine, people are always a bit shocked that a tech-savvy young professional crochets or knits... The ones who think it's tacky or call you "gramaw" often turn out to be the ones envying what you're wearing, too! That's definitely one of my guilty pleasures.
Any anecdotes about the 'social' side of crochet? :) A warm fuzzy hello to all of you!

No, but then I'm a retired gramaw, lol.
Absolutely! My family used to poke fun at me until they realized that they got really great afghans out of the deal. Other people just seem to go, "Crochet? Hmm, isn't that like granny squares?" I just ignore it and carry on because I love it.
What a coincidence! I used to work in the game industry too. (Just quit recently to go back to art school.) I drove my coworkers crazy by knitting and crocheting at my desk at lunch. I got the only other female in our office into it too, so we would yack about our latest amigurumi while everyone else was talking about the newest first person shooter. At first people thought it was just weird, but they liked it when I made their babies cute hats, and I started getting flooded with requests for Hellboy amigurumis and such, haha. :)
Everyone is always really impressed and wants me to teach them. And then you get the kid who will insist at you for an hour that you are, in fact, knitting.
My coworkers could TRY to make fun of me but I'd bust them down so fast it would take them years to get out of it. Also, I control their paychecks, so they can suck an egg if they don't like it.
On the other hand, many of them have gotten presents from me and commissioned me to do things for them, so it's not really an issue.
Hardcore? Hardcore is for babies. I'm HOOKCORE!
Oh yes- either I get the "only old ladies do that" (I'm 36) or "gosh I don't have the TIME to do that, what with my terribly important life and everything" implying that I lay around all day eating bon bons and crocheting. Um no, I have a job, a family, a house, and way too many chores. I just MAKE time for something I want to do. On the bright side I have 2 friends who really want me to teach them to crochet. so- yay! "your mom doesn't mind when I crochet"
However when someone asks me what my hobbies are and I start with "I crochet, knit, and sew." they automatically assume I'm pregnant! That's quite weird to me.
I don't usually get made fun of, but I do get a lot of people saying, "ooooh neat I wish I knew how to do that."
Eliea, LOL! that's too funny about mentioning crochet, knit, etc. Occasionally I get asked, who's having a baby, when they see me making something...
I don't get made fun of at work. My family will occasionally tease me but they really like the things I make so they are very careful in what they say. I have several friends at work and 2 sisters that I have taught to knit or crochet. Most everyone likes crochet more but I figure let them do what they like. We have a great time meeting at lunch and working on our projects (and gabbing). Makes the day seem worthwhile.
I actually get a lot of praise for my crocheting and knitting. Many of my friends and family are always asking what I'm working on next and how my crocheting/knitting is going. In some cases it's the first question I get from people I haven't seen in awhile.

Hi there,
Yes, I am made fun of too. I lecture in Interior Design and my students find the 'crochet thing' hilarious. I did, however, convert 6 students to the craft last year in my lunch break!

My friends make fun of me every chance they get. xD I guess it just comes with the territory. But hey, I've got the coolest scarves. :)
I like to dance to loading zone announcements.
My Blog!
Bubbo, you write a lot of funny posts, but this one made me spit out my drink!
