Hi Joiyee, it depends on the project. If I am crochetting a garment, usually I do it kind of loose so the piece will have some drape. If I am making a basket or a bag, I make it tight for a stiff fabric.

Loose, but I usually don't loosen up until *after* I've made a gauge swatch. :(

I always have to move up a hook size from the patten, so tight, I guess. I've tried to loosen up, but it's just not comfortable! :)

I'm tight and also have to move up a hook size. But begin tight is good with amigurumi...not so much with hats, scarves and such.
